Lionel Richie Garang is half Tanzanian, with Kenyan and Sudanese roots. He was born in Kenya and comes from a background of artists. His mother is a fashion designer and his brother an artist. After secondary school he then started doing grafitti on Public Service vehicles in Nairobi after which he  moved on to painting on canvas using acrylic paints.
 
He  has also moved into making sculptures using fiber glass and resin. He started out with modelling with plaster of paris and casting with fibre glass then moved on to sculpting with wood as well. Currently  he is doing mixed media using wood and recycled empty spray cans. His love for art started when he was in primary school, he used to draw on exercise books & t shirts.

Garang has a studio at Kuona Trust where he works and sells his art. He has participate d in exhibitions including the Friends of the Arts exhibition held at the International School of Kenya and Peace through Service at the Village market, ake Basin art group-2010, Art Cafe-2013, Peace Through Service-2013,ISK Fota-2013/2014.He also has some of his work displayed at the British High Commisssion in Nairobi. Garang's art works has also been published in several books and magazines including the Kenya Art diary, the Ticah calendar, Up magazine, Talanta magazine. The artist has also participated in a public art project at Kuona Trust, Tafaria Castle in Nyahururu and in Isiolo.
