18-years-old John has lost his mother, and is employed by a lady as water hawker. John's cousin, Arzouma, is back from the village and informs him that his (John's) father wants him to come back for the rainy season with a plough and a ploughing bull. John cannot supply himself properly because of water rationing. His lady employer threatens to fire him. John is compelled to work hard to be able to buy the plough and the bull for his father.
