With support from the Swiss Foreign Ministry's Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Open Doors aims to support and highlight films and filmmakers from the South and the East, where independent filmmaking is vulnerable, via a focus on a different region every year. The next edition will explore Sub-Saharan Africa, following the spotlight on Francophone African countries in 2012. 2014 will cover the following nations, which did not participate in 2012:

Angola, Botswana, Cape Verde, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Southern Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Festival will select a dozen projects from the region to participate in Open Doors 2014. The objective of the co-production lab (August 9-12) is to bring the finalist projects' directors and producers together with potential partners, to encourage support for these projects to come to fruition.

Open Doors will continue the new initiative introduced in 2013, whereby, in addition to enabling the selected directors and producers to meet possible partners, there are also workshops for professionals on related film industry issues, with individual meetings and panels on training and marketing. The four-day event will conclude with the awards. The Open Doors Grant, worth 50,000 CHF (ca. 40'000 EUR), is funded by the Open Doors initiative in collaboration with the Town of Bellinzona and the Swiss production support fund Visions Sud Est, also supported by the SDC. Two further awards are offered by the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée) and by ARTE.

In addition to these initiatives for professionals, the section also offers the general Festival audience the Open Doors Screenings, which present a selection of films that are representative of production in the countries involved.

The initiative is organized in close collaboration with Locarno's Industry Office and enjoys the support of ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen), EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) and the Producers Network Marché du Film (Festival de Cannes).

The 2014 edition of Open Doors is the first to be managed by Ananda Scepka, who succeeds Martina Malacrida. A graduate in philosophy and history from the Sorbonne in Paris, Ananda Scepka has been working with the Festival since 2009.
For this edition of Open Doors, the Festival is working with Alex Moussa Sawadogo, an expert in African cinema and director of the Afrikamera Festival in Berlin.

The 2014 edition is open for applications as of today, via www.opendoors.pardo.ch for projects originating from any of the 25 countries listed above.

The 67th edition of the Festival del film Locarno will take place August 6 -16 2014.

Open Doors 2014: un altro lato dell'Africa
La dodicesima edizione di Open Doors tornerà a dedicarsi all'Africa subsahariana.

Con il sostegno della Direzione dello sviluppo e della cooperazione (DSC) del Dipartimento federale degli affari esteri (Svizzera), Open Doors mira a sostenere e mettere in luce registi e film di paesi del Sud e dell'Est del mondo dal fragile cinema indipendente, coinvolgendo ogni anno una regione diversa. La prossima edizione tornerà a dedicarsi all'Africa subsahariana, già protagonista nel 2012 con i paesi francofoni. L'edizione 2014 sarà dedicata ai seguenti paesi, che non hanno partecipato nel 2012:

Il Festival selezionerà fra le candidature ricevute una dozzina di progetti che parteciperanno all'edizione 2014 di Open Doors. Il laboratorio di coproduzione (9-12 agosto) ha lo scopo di mettere in contatto i registi e produttori finalisti con potenziali partner, al fine di favorire il sostegno necessario al finanziamento dei progetti.

Viene confermata la formula introdotta nel 2013, in cui oltre a permettere ai registi e produttori selezionati di incontrare possibili partner, l'iniziativa propone degli atelier per gli addetti ai lavori legati alle problematiche dell'industria cinematografica, con incontri individuali e panel sulla formazione e l'informazione. A conclusione di questi quattro giorni verranno premiati i migliori progetti. Il premio Open Doors, del valore di 50'000 CHF (ca. 40'000 EUR), è finanziato dall'iniziativa Open Doors in collaborazione con la Città di Bellinzona e il fondo svizzero di sostegno alla produzione Visions Sud Est, anch'esso sostenuto dalla DSC. Due ulteriori premi saranno offerti rispettivamente dal CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée) e da ARTE.

Oltre a queste iniziative per i professionisti, la sezione si compone anche di una parte dedicata al pubblico del Festival, gli Open Doors Screenings, che presentano una selezione di film rappresentativi della cinematografia dei paesi coinvolti.

L'iniziativa è organizzata in stretta collaborazione con l'Industry Office del Festival di Locarno e conta sul supporto dei partner ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen), EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) e Producers Network Marché du Film (Festival de Cannes).

L'edizione 2014 di Open Doors è la prima in qualità di responsabile di Ananda Scepka, che subentra a Martina Malacrida. Open Doors 2014: Eine andere Seite Afrikas
Die 12. Ausgabe von Open Doors wendet sich erneut Subsahara-Afrika zu.

Mit der Unterstützung der Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit (DEZA) des eidgenössischen Departements für auswärtige Angelegenheiten unterstützt Open Doors unabhängige Filmschaffende und Filme aus Ländern des Südens und des Ostens - wobei jedes Jahr die Wahl auf eine andere Weltregion fällt. Open Doors richtet seine Aufmerksamkeit 2014 erneut auf das subsaharische Afrika, das bereits 2012 - damals mit den französischsprachigen Ländern - im Zentrum stand. Der Fokus 2014 wird auf die folgenden Nationen gerichtet, welche 2012 nicht teilnahmen:

Äthiopien, Angola, Botswana, Eritrea, Gambia, Ghana, Kap Verde, Kenia, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Moçambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sambia, São Tomé und Príncipe, Sierra Leone, Simbabwe, Somalia, Sudan, Südafrika, Südsudan, Swasiland, Tansania, Uganda.

Das Festival wählt aus den eingereichten Projekten rund ein Dutzend Titel aus, die 2014 im Rahmen von Open Doors präsentiert werden. Der Koproduktions-Workshop, der vom 9. bis 12. August dauert, soll die ausgewählten Regisseure und Produzenten mit möglichen Koproduktionspartnern in Kontakt bringen mit dem Ziel, der Finanzierung der Projekte die nötige Unterstützung zu bieten.

Das Vorgehen, das 2013 gewählt wurde, wird beibehalten. Dabei werden nebst der Möglichkeit für die ausgewählten Regisseure und Produzenten, sich mit potentiellen Koproduktionspartnern zu treffen, Workshops angeboten, die sich an die Teilnehmer richten und sich mit Problematiken der Filmbranche beschäftigen. Nebst individuellen Gesprächen widmen sich auch Foren gewissen Fragen zum beruflichen Werdegang und dem Informationsaustausch. Im Anschluss an diese vier Tage werden die besten Projekte ausgezeichnet. Der Open-Doors-Preis in der Höhe von 50 000 CHF (ca. 40 000 EUR) wird finanziert durch die Initiative Open Doors in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Bellinzona und dem Schweizer Fonds zur Produktionsunterstützung Visions Sud Est, welcher ebenfalls von der DEZA unterstützt ist. Zwei weitere Preise werden durch das CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée) sowie ARTE verliehen.

Nebst diesen Angeboten für Vertreter der Branche beinhaltet diese Programmsektion auch einen Teil, der sich ans allgemeine Festivalpublikum richtet: die Open Doors Screenings. Diese beinhalten eine repräsentative Auswahl von Titeln aus dem Filmschaffen der beteiligten Länder.

Die Initiative steht in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Industry Office des Festival del film Locarno und kann auf die Unterstützung der folgenden Partner zählen: ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen), EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) sowie Producers Network Marché du Film (Festival de Cannes).

Für Open Doors 2014 zeichnet erstmals Ananda Scepka verantwortlich, die Martina Malacrida in dieser Funktion ablöst. Ananda Scepka hat an der Universität Paris-Sorbonne Philosophie und Geschichte studiert und ist seit 2009 Mitarbeiterin des Festivals.
Die Programmreihe Open Doors kann zudem für diese Ausgabe auf die Mitarbeit von Alex Moussa Sawadogo zählen - einem Experten des afrikanischen Kinos und Leiter des Festivals Afrikamera in Berlin.
